Best Wood Chisel Sets for Beginner WoodworkersPeople always asking for 'beginner' chisels. Most sets are trash. Dull fast, handles break. Spend a little more now, cry once. Learn on something that holds an edge, not some soft steel nonsense.

    Czech carbon steel. Holds an edge well enough for a starter. Still, flatten the backs and hone them yourself. Don't expect perfection, but beats anything from a big box store.

    German steel, traditional wooden handles. Decent quality. Reliable. Expect to sharpen them immediately. A good foundation.
